I have for sale a counterfeit quad band Apple iPhone 3GS with a $100 SIM card. This unit was purchased in China. It looks exactly like an iPhone 3GS, including the Apple logo, design, etc. The display is identically sized, and is very sharp (not like the cheap counterfeit iPhones that flooded the market earlier this year). The hardware is reportedly the same as the iPhone 3GS, including the display. The price reflects what I actually paid, and I got a good deal. You get the savings!

It does have multi-touch, velocimeter, and all the features you’d expect from a real iPhone. What’s different is the software. It’s based on a Chinese version of Linux. While the menus are switched to English, most of the configuration is in Chinese. If you can read Chinese, you will have a much easier time with this phone. It is possible that you could flash this phone with the iPhone software and have a full-fledged iPhone. I’m not sure how to do that, and don’t really have time to mess with it. It’s supposedly the same process as “jailbreaking” an iPhone and uses the same tools.

The phone is in excellent almost new condition, and I’ve used it only to play with it and check out the functionality. It has less than an hour of talk time and a few text messages sent. In fact, it’s only 2 weeks old, since I just brought it back from Beijing. It comes with a “genuine” Apple USB cable and charging adapter. I’m having the original box and manual (a real iPhone box and manual for the UK version of the handset) sent from China, and assuming it makes it through Customs, I’ll give this to you later if you’re interested.

This unit is being sold with an AT&T prepaid SIM card with a $103 credit. So, assuming you either read Chinese or you can re-flash the phone to Apple’s operating system, you’ll have an UNLOCKED iPhone 3GS (or equivalent) with $103 in calling credit and an AT&T SIM card. You can apply the credit toward any GoPhone plan or toward an ordinary plan if you sign up with AT&T. Since the IMEI is not an Apple IMEI, AT&T will not force you to sign up for the more expensive iPhone calling plan.

EThe first Android phone, the G1 made by Taiwan’s HTC, was launched late last year by T-Mobile. Since then, the company has started selling a new version of that phone – the G2. Meanwhile, Vodafone has clinched an exclusive deal to sell the another HTC Android phone called the Magic. But the Motorola device, codenamed Morrison, will be the first Android phone from a big-name maker. It will be unveiled in the US on 10 September and in the UK five days later.

Motorola has fallen from grace over the past half decade to such an extent that bosses at the US giant considered closing the cellphone division before bowing to pressure from activist investor Carl Icahn to demerge the unit.

Motorola had about a quarter of the global handset market four years ago, in part thanks to its successful and ultra-slim Razr phone. But since then, its share has crashed to about 5% amid intense competition from rivals Samsung and LG and, more recently, Apple.

T-Mobile, meanwhile, will widen its range of Android devices in the UK with its own exclusive deal, expected to be announced later this week, to stock the first Android device from Huawei. The phone, codenamed the Pulse, is a touchscreen device but it is designed to appeal to cash-strapped consumers.

The G1 is free to customers willing to sign up to a £30 a month contract, and the G2 is free on a £36.50 a month deal.

Neither T-Mobile nor Orange would comment.

A SIM lock, simlock, network lock or subsidy lock is a capability built into GSM phones by mobile phone manufacturers. Network providers use this capability to restrict the use of these phones to specific countries and network providers. Generally, phones can be locked to accept only SIM cards based on the International Mobile Subscriber Identity, which has elements of:

* Mobile country code (MCC; e.g., will only work with SIMs issued in one country)

* Mobile network code (MNC; e.g., AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile, Vodafone, etc.)

* Mobile station identification number (MSIN; i.e., only one SIM can be used with the phone)

Additionally, at least Nokia phones can lock group IDs which are used in voice group call service.[1]

In most countries, most mobile phones are shipped with country and/or network provider locks. In addition, these locked phones tend to have firmware installed on them which is specific to the network provider. For example, if you have a Vodafone or Telstra branded phone in Australia, it displays the relevant logo and may only support features provided by that network (e.g., Vodafone Live!). This firmware is installed by the service provider and is separate from the locking mechanism.

Most mobile phones can be unlocked to work with any GSM, such as O2 or Orange (in the UK), but the phone may still display the original branding and may not support features of the new carrier. Most phones can be unbranded by uploading a different firmware version, a procedure recommended for advanced users only.
